From September 2022-April 2023 I was living in Toronto. I would travel (bus, metro and train) every few weeks to get back to Montreal….Well the first time I left Montreal (after spending a few days there)…I ended up getting on a train and destroying my ankle…

This was my diary post from September 26th 2022
September 26th
Today was the day I went back to Toronto. My dad was more disappointed because I ended up falling asleep early the night before and never really said goodbye.
I woke up early Monday and the leg pain was even worse than it was the night before. It got to a point where my mom dropped me off directly in front of the train station because I was not able to walk anymore.
I got some breakfast and sat down to eat. I was still about an hour early before the train, but it was better than taking a bus in.
Well, after I ate breakfast, I parked my butt down at a small area where I sat and I logged into my first class of the day. It was very awkward because as I was on zoom the guy coming to check the ticket tried to wave to my class. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that my camera was off but it did make my morning at that hour.
Because I was sitting by the entrance, when we were supposed to board the train, I was one of three who was allowed to go down first, which was helpful because of the amount of pain I was in.
Now looking back, I am trying to figure out why I did not want to take any pain medication but for the life of me I still don’t even have an answer that. Because pain medication could have reduced the pain by a lot.
While sitting there the pain was getting worse. At one point I needed to pee and I was putting it off as much as I could because I did not want to have to walk but I hit he point there was no choice. That’s when I realized I could not keep walking.
When the train finally arrived in Toronto, we finally got the chance to get off the train. this is where the drama happened. As we were walking down the stairs, my knee gave out and my entire body twisted from my ankle to my knee, and I landed on my back.
I for sure thought something was broken. After doing the incident report, the guy put me in a wheelchair and rolled me all the way to the other side of the station where I got on the metro. By that point I was able to walk a bit but it could not bend back in my leg near the Achilles tendon.
The metro ride was about 40 minutes long, so the entire time the advil was finally taking effect and the pain was becoming less.
Once we arrived at Finches station, I got off the metro and got onto the bus well I had another hour and 10 minutes sitting until we got to the school.
Once in my dorm room, I took off my shoes very slowly and then my socks. That is where I noticed how swollen my ankle was and how bruised it was becoming.
The rest of the night I put ice on my ankle, and I kept it elevated with a TENS unit machine to try and sleep.

I went to the doctor a few days later…maybe like two days later and she said that it does not look broken but sent me for X-Rays. My X-Rays were clear nothing was broken but it was swollen and it was about four different colours and the swelling. And I was unable to walk.
Now when I went back to Montreal I saw my Rheumatologist and I showed him the images and he confirmed there was a tear but it had been a few months since so he didn’t think there was any issue.
Now, it is 2024 and I have been having a lot of problems with my leg and ankle. It keeps swelling up and it is causing shooting pains through my tibia and even into my knee at times. I still have a hard time skating because of the pain and my foot not properly fitting into my skate, and on the days it does it causes such bad pain a few minutes to even an hour later I have trouble walking.
In late May 2024 I got an X-Ray that was prescribed by my main doctor. The X-Ray said:
Results (Translated from French):
There is a subtle irregularity of contours on the lateral aspect of the talus, below the external malleolus. This could be constitutional (normal for the individual), but old traumatic sequelae are not excluded. Is there a history of trauma? No acute or subacute fracture. No dsolacation. The morose s well aligned.
Meaning:There is a slight abnormality in the shape of the talus bone located near the ankle. This could be from trauma but everything else seems okay.
I am on the waiting list for an MRI. It should be in the near-future because it’s been a few weeks that I have been on the list.
I am hoping it is nothing bad but I mean after two years it is still swelling, causing pain and giving me lots of trouble. I will keep you posted son.
